In 2009, the National Forensic Laboratory Services (NFLS) initiated a pilot project to allow private laboratories indirect access to the National DNA Data Bank (NDDB) Crime Scene Index (CSI). This was an interim measure while improvements to casework processing times were established.

Use of this indirect access to the NDDB’s CSI has been very limited. Consequently NFLS has decided not to extend the pilot project. Indirect access to the CSI has been discontinued for all private laboratories.

All requests for DNA analysis that require access to the Crime Scene Index of the National DNA Databank MUST be submitted to NFLS.

If the use of a private laboratory is being considered for a Designated Offence please contact the Forensic Assessment Center to discuss possible outcomes. Please note that this decision does NOT apply to cases that are sent to a private laboratory as a subcontracting laboratory directly by the RCMP.
