Post Analysis
NFLS is an assistance agency - all exhibit material, results and documentation resulting from work done at NFLS belongs to the submitting agency.
Exhibit Return
All exhibits, including sub-samples (such as DNA extracts) are returned to the agency or associated repositories upon completion of the examination. Some exceptions include exhibits consumed in analysis (including 'cuttings'), uninitiated explosives and ammunition components retained in archive for possible future comparison to cases linked via IBIS/CIBIN matches.
Please contact the FAC if you require exhibits to be returned quickly:
-
for court
-
for subsequent examination outside of NFLS
-
to return an item to its owner
Return of Documentation
The documentation gathered and produced by NFLS for each laboratory file is retained for a period of 2 years following the last activity noted on file. Following this time period, all documentation (including reports, working file, etc.) are returned to the submitting agency.
Packages may be returned from any or all of the NFLS laboratory sites in Surrey, Edmonton and/or Ottawa, depending on where the examinations have taken place.
IMPORTANT
The documentation required to re-activate an NFLS laboratory file is included in the returned packages and is not retained by NFLS.
It is important to follow your agency's retention policies in order to ensure the documentation for open cases is available in the future, should it be required. Further analysis may not be possible if this documentation is not available.
