In the coming weeks, National Forensic Laboratory Services (NFLS) will be engaging with key policing partners to assist in determining the number of cases that could be submitted for reinterpretation using STRmix™, a technique that has added significant analytical capability to NFLS as it aids in the interpretation of complex DNA mixtures (including exhibits or samples with low levels of DNA, degradation, or contributors of three or more persons).

A submission process for requests for re-interpretation will be developed and shared with policing partners for feedback. Once acceptance protocols are finalized, NFLS will begin accepting requests for STRmix™ re-interpretation. Prior to acceptance protocols being finalized, certain requests may be accepted such as requests involving imminent loss of witnesses/suspects, and/or where there are incidents that are serial in nature.
