National Forensic Laboratory Services (NFLS) will be introducing some minor changes in the way it processes submissions received from Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) officers, specifically as they relate to screening for the presence of drugs in blood and urine samples marked “cannabis only.”

NFLS has been providing a full drug screen for all DRE submissions, even for those marked “cannabis only.” Starting August 27, 2018, NFLS will only screen for the presence of cannabinoids (THC and/or its metabolites) for DRE submissions marked “cannabis only.” Targeting the most relevant drug for screening is expected to have minimal impact to DRE operations while allowing for a more efficient use of highly specialized forensic resources. This new protocol is expected to reduce nonessential screening practices in toxicology services. The related time savings will be used to support other police investigations, including other cases involving drug impaired driving.

NFLS will continue to work collaboratively with the DRE program to provide necessary forensic services. A full drug screen for DRE “cannabis only” requests may be considered under exceptional circumstances and based on unique operational requirements. I would like to thank you in advance for your understanding and participation. Our continued collaboration helps ensure we provide timely forensic services in support of law enforcement and court proceedings.

Sincerely, Mauro Golin Acting Director of Operations, NFLS
